Hania is Crete's second city. Originally called Kydonia in Minoan times, the city has been in existence since 2000 BC. Early Minoan sites are scattered about the area and the old Venetian port, dating back to the 1600s, is the main attraction with many fine restaurants and tavernas. Hania has a brand new central hospital as well as all modern services, shopping, internet cafes, markets etc. The older parts of the city have been restored and are picturesque areas for tourists to stroll. The central market, built in 1913, is the still the main shopping centre for fresh fish, meats, and vegetables and is a good place to have a traditional Cretan meal. Chania has a lively night life all year round with theatre performances, live music, and art exhibitions. |
